A dedicated hostel-based community liver service for Homeless and Vulnerable Adults: VALID (Vulnerable Adults Liver Disease) Study

Dr Sumita Verma is a Reader in Medicine and Hon Consultant Hepatologist at the Brighton and Sussex Medical School (BSMS) and Brighton and Sussex University Hospital (BSUH). After completing her Gastroenterology and Hepatology training in Yorkshire she worked as a Consultant Hepatologist at University of Southern California and Johns Hopkins University Hopsitals. She was subsequently appointed as an Academic Hepatologist at BSMS/BSUH in 2007.

Since her appointment at BSMS/BSUH Sumita has developed Hepatology clinically and academically. BSUH is now recognised by KSS Deanery for level 2 Hepatology training and is also one of the national Hepatitis C centres (Sussex Operator Delivery Network).

Sumita’s research focusses on screening for liver disease in high risk individuals as well as developing novel community models of care for vulnerable adults. Additionally, she is also researching improving symptom burden (ascites management) in end stage liver disease. She has received funding from prestigious organisations such as the the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) and the Dunhill Medical Trust.
