Dr Neil Hamlet, MBChB, DRCOG, MRCGP, DTM&H, DTCE, FFPH
Consultant in Public Health Medicine
NHS Fife, Scotland, UK, National Public Health Lead for Health and Homelessness
Neil trained as a GP in the 1980s before relocating with his young family to Nepal where he directed a regional tuberculosis and leprosy programme in the remote western region. From there he moved to Kathmandu as medical director for the organisation. During his time in Nepal he undertook a number of consultancies for WHO, World Bank and other agencies in the field of tuberculosis control across South Asia.
Returning to Scotland in 1999 he retrained in Public Health Medicine and currently works as a Consultant in Fife.
His passion is health improvement and reducing health inequalities. His focus is ‘the causes of the causes’ such that he now describes himself as a ‘salutogenic engineer’ rather than a doctor.
He is currently engaged in a programme of work seeking to re-invigorate the NHS Scotland’s contribution to the prevention and mitigation of the health causes and consequences of insecure tenancy and homelessness.
