Joanna Dawes

In 1997 Jo Dawes qualified as a physiotherapist from Glasgow Caledonian University, UK.
She has worked in various National Health Service and higher education settings. Between 2000 and 2007 she worked full time as a physiotherapist for Greater Glasgow Primary Care Trust, within a specialist health and social care team for homeless people.
She moved to London in 2008, initially working at University of East London, and then in 2012, she joined the academic staff at St George’s, University of London, as a Senior Lecturer in physiotherapy.
Throughout her career, Jo has maintained an interest in homelessness and excluded populations.
She contributes to the work of the homelessness charity Crisis, having developed a physiotherapy service, which runs during ‘Crisis at Christmas’.
She has also contributed to the Faculty of Homeless and Inclusion Health’s “Standards for commissioners and service providers”.
Jo has a diverse interest in research, completing an MPhil, which evaluated the benefits of exercise in substance misuse rehabilitation; she has worked in Zambia, researching HIV counselling and testing interventions in farming and mining industries; and, has carried out research in partnership with organisations providing physical activity interventions, such as running and cycling for homeless and refugee populations.
